No, really, please explain it to me. I honestly don’t understand how we go from decades of Cold War where Russia is the enemy of Western democracies and civilized societies with American fighting for freedom around the globe (in theory) to … whatever this is.
So, Americans are the bad guys now, and we’re picking on … Canada? What kind of psychopath picks on our closest, kindest ally and trading partner.
Yes, Americans are provincial. The average American doesn’t travel internationally much (beyond Mexico and Canada), and it shows. But one thing almost ALL Americans understand is that we do not want to live the way Russian citizens are forced to live. We don’t want a bleak and repressive regime where a handful of insanely rich oligarchs are “free” and everyone else cowers in fear or bends a knee or gets shipped off to a gulag or to conquer a neighboring democratic country.
We’re more like the rest of Europe, whether Americans understand it that way or not. Americans want to freely say any dumb thing we have on our minds at any time. We want to buy cheap imported goods that artificially inflate our standard of living.
We don’t want to worry that our neighbor will turn us in for criticizing the state. We don’t want real journalists being muzzled or killed (no matter how much truth and the free press is demonized of late). Or resisters of a dictatorship being assaulted and dragged out of government meetings. Or artists being censored and abused. This is not American.
The well-documented fact that Trump has been cozy with Russia since his bankruptcies in the the 1980s, was always a HUGE red flag. Trump’s sons have said the Trump organization received financing from Russia.
No one seems to know or care how much Trump is compromised. Putin, meanwhile, understands exactly how to flatter Don the Con, and either through “friendship” and flattery or coercion, Trump unfailingly does ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Putin wants, which is ultimately the complete destruction of America, Western democracy and free societies.
Republicans are committing treason along with Trump right now. Trump is working to hand Ukraine to Russia. Trump is attempting to dismantle NATO. Trump is destroying the foundations of American government and working to plunge the world’s greatest economy into chaos.
Trump is even working to boost crypto “currency” with the U.S. Treasury. Crypto is literally the money laundering and banking tool of every single bad actor in the world. Trump is either knowingly or stupidly committing treason against this country every second that he does Putin’s bidding, and history will make this very clear.
Historians will have a harder time answering why Americans let it happen, and why they even cheered for and rallied around an obvious traitor. Trump has even managed to turn public sentiment away from Ukraine’s president as he fights for everything America was supposed to represent.
Zelenskyy is the ultimate anti-Trump, a courageous patriot who stands up to Putin and fights for democracy and Western values. Also, Americans conveniently forgot we promised to forever protect Ukraine when it voluntarily gave up its stock of Soviet-era nuclear weapons decades ago.
Let it never be forgotten that in this moment, America’s oligarchs (including every single tech bro) enabled Trump and Russia’s destruction of America and its ideals. Every single Republican in Congress colluded with Trump to let this happen — by voting for his horrific cabinet picks and letting Elon Musk take a chainsaw to every corner of the federal government working in the public interest and threatening our U.S. Treasury. The 77 million Americans who voted for Trump willingly voted for the end of American freedom and self governance.
There’s still time to resist, but that window is closing fast.
